Have you ever seen a woman with long eyelashes and wondered if they were her natural lashes? Elizabeth Taylor had very thick eyelashes as a result of a genetic mutation, called distichiasis (pronounced dis-tic-key-i-asis). Distichiasis forms two rows of lashes on both eyes instead of the customary one row that most people have on each eye. It is a very rare condition, and Elizabeth Taylor used it to her advantage as a great actress.
For those of us not so fortunate with that particular genetic mutation, we have eyelash extensions. The extensions can really enhance the look of a person’s eyes. Depending on the length and thickness of the lashes, you will need to maintain the health and look of them. Below are some tips to help you care for your lashes so they’ll last a long time.
AVOID WATER NEAR YOUR EYES FOR A DAY. The glue for the lashes needs time to dry, so try not to wash your face around your eyes or splash any water on your face for several hours. This includes taking a shower, swimming, or even using steam near your face, as in giving yourself a facial.
BRUSH YOUR LASHES. If you want to keep your lashes lush and beautiful, gently brush your extensions periodically. Brushing the lashes removes any dust, lint, or other particles that can get caught in the strands. You don’t have to use any cleaning solution; matter of fact, it’s best that you don’t, just in case the solution causes the glue to dissolve.
USE AN OIL-FREE MAKEUP REMOVER. If you wear eye shadow or mascara, use a gentle solution to remove your makeup. Again, you don’t want to dissolve the glue used for the lash extensions, so be careful near your lashes when removing your makeup and cleaning your face.
EASY DOES IT! Don’t rub your eyes too often or pick at your extensions. You run the risk of pulling out your natural lashes, and you don’t want to do that. Also, don’t trim or cut the extensions, because you could cut your own eyelashes doing that, as well.
SLEEP POSITIONS MATTER. If you sleep on your stomach, sorry folks; you’ll need to switch up. As Prince would say, “You’ve got to try a new position!” You can’t afford to mash your face into your pillow, because that could rub your extensions right off your eyes, and you don’t want to do that. Not after all the trouble it took you to glue them on, right? Sleep on your side or your back while you’re wearing the extensions; it will preserve them longer.
